\nHester's actions show this. When she is forced to wear the scarlet letter and stand upon the scaffold, Hester does not merely cower and quake beneath the Puritans' gazes. Rather, she decorates the scarlet letter so that it is "fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom" (51), and "sustain[s] herself as best a woman might" (53), all the while holding her head high. One must be quite dignified to manage such a feat.
\n
\nHester's words exhibit her personality. Whenever she is asked to identify with whom she committed adultery, Hester always responds along the lines of, "'Ask me not! [...] Thou shalt never know!'" (69). Her refusal to blame others for her own wrongdoings prove her personality and pride.
\n
\nFinally, the narrator presents Hester in exactly this manner. The author first introduces Hester as being "characterized by a certain state and dignity, rather than by delicate, evanescent, and indescribable grace" (50).

She is able to work as a seamstress and make enough money to be able to survive. Others find it strange that she has stayed when she is an outcast but she doesn't care what they think.
