\n
\nThis can be assumed because when Hester is accused of adultery, various images of people from her past flash before her eyes. Hester recalls this man in vivid details, but her "womanly fancy failed not to recall" (55) his misshapen features. If he is indeed her husband, then it makes sense that she personally knows and understands him but disregards his less pleasant deformities.
\n
\nAdditionally, when she moved to America to begin a new life, she was "still in connection with the misshapen scholar" (55). The only male that Hester would be likely to remain in contact with would be her husband.
\n
\nFinally, immediately after remembering this man's face, Hester is yanked back into the present and realizes "that the infant and the shame were real." The only way should would really feel guilt over the child and scarlet letter at this moment in time would be if she cheated on her spouse.
\n
\nTherefore, the "misshapen scholar" is Hester Prynne's husband.
