Prohibition is when it was illegal to manufacture, transport,import, export and sell any alcoholic beverage. This was done because they believed it would lower crime and corruption, reduce social problems, lower taxes needed to support prisons and poorhouses and to improve health and hygiene in America. The fight was led by the Women's Christian Temperance Union who protested for the ban on alcohol. This caused an increase of organized crime, gangs. The courts and prisons became overloaded and there was corruption of police officers and public officials.
