Betty Paris is seen in bed while her father Reverend Paris is praying for her to recover. Betty could be a victim of witchcraft and because this might be so her father sends for a witchcraft expert, Thomas Hale. Paris starts yelling at his niece Abigail Williams because he discovered them and the slave Tituba in the woods dancing. Abigail denies practicing witchcraft and states that Betty was in shock that her father saw her dancing in the woods.

Elizabeth Proctor then comes into the room and becomes angry and Abigail because she would not work for her. Paris then asks why nobody has hired her for her services if Elizabeth's accusations of her witchcraft are wrong. Mr. and Mrs. Putnam then question why their daughter Ruth saw Betty flying over a neighbor's barn. Mrs. Putnam sent her daughter to Tituba because she believed that witchcraft was involved in the death of her seven children. Mercy Lewis then tells the Putnams that their daughter Ruth is feeling better.

Mary Warren, who is the Proctor's servant tells everyone that they all will be accused of witches sooner rather than later. Betty then cries because she believes that Abigail did not tell Parris everything that happened in the woods. Abigail excluded the part about them drinking blood as a way to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail then hits Betty and insists that all they did was dance in the woods. She also states that Tituba was the reason why Ruth's siblings died and threatens to kill them if anything happens to her.
